By now, the images are everywhere: Brazilian fans in utter shock and disbelief after seeing their team trounced by Germany, 7-1, in a match that destroyed their hopes of winning a sixth World Cup before a home crowd.

The headlines of horror on Brazil's front pages Wednesday morning won't make it any easier for these fans to recover.

As Mashable's Ben Tavener and his colleague Cedar Attanasio â€" both of whom are in Brazil â€" found, fans on the streets of São Paulo might have been disappointed on Tuesday night, but they also offered some sober assessments of what went wrong. Clearly, the loss of star striker Neymar to injury was on the minds of many.

  • "I really didn't enjoy the game today. It was really bad. It's so sad that Brazil is out. I was really disappointed. The players were warriors, but our best player was already out of the World Cup." â€" Zilga Lima dos Reis, 53, salesperson, Montas Claras

  • "Firstly, as I see it, the biggest failure has to lie with the manager. It was up to him to change up the team, and that wasn't done." â€" Adriano da Silva, 38, hospital technician, São Paulo

  • "It was a mistake in terms of the team they picked... a lack of togetherness; too much emotion; and not enough effort." â€" Danilo Roman Campos, 30, biophysics lecturer, São Paulo

  • "I think the game was a complete disgrace, to be honest. To lose 7-1... Germany is a really strong team, but they ended up teaching Brazil a thing or two about football." â€" Yumi Fukui, 21, student, São Paulo

  • "It's a feeling of disappointment, but for the players, for David Luiz, for Neymar, their mission was accomplished because we've hosted a World Cup not only for the team, but to show we are capable [of organizing] it. ... From the moment they sang the anthem with [Neymar's] shirt there, they weren't 100% focused on the game." â€" Vinícius Britto Neves, 23, salesperson, São Paulo
