Is 'Star Trek' Technology Still Light Years Away?

In the age of iPads, flying cars and space rovers, some gadgets that were once confined to the science-fiction world are quickly becoming commonplace 21st-century commodities.

Star Trek, which aired its first episode more than 40 years ago on NBC, stood at the forefront, dazzling its fan base for decades with such high-tech gizmos as phasers and tricorders in the exploration of the final frontier. musicMagpie just launched a fully interactive Star Trek Navigraphic (above), which takes a look at some of the series' iconic technology. The experience doens't just to give a nod to the saga's creative minds, it also evaluates just how many light years away we are from futuristic gear.

The Navigraphic lets you board three replicas of Enterprise bridges, reconstructed via Paramount’s footage, screen stills and archive images. It shows you how close Earthlings are to replicating La Forge's visor, replicators and hyposprays, among other Trek techs. musicMagpie is also giving three people a chance to win a collection of Star Trek memorabilia, a 32GB iPad and a PlayStation 3. To enter, beam yourself up to the Navigraphic before Aug. 5.

What other silver screen gadgets have you stumbled upon that are no longer fiction? Take a look at how bits of Star Trek are turning into science reality, and discuss in the comments below.
