iCoil Keeps Your Headphones Tangle-Free

In a perfect world, all electronics would be cordless.

Think about how many times you've tripped over your laptop charger, or the countless occasions on which you've found your iPod earbuds at the bottom of your gym bag in a knotted mess.

Begrudge their inconvenience as we may, most of the devices we use still depend on cords â€" whether they serve to transfer information or electricity.

However, as Bluetooth technology has expanded its scope, wireless headphones have become widely â€" though not cheaply â€" available. Bluetooth-powered headphones eliminate the problem of cord tangling entirely, but there's hope yet for those of us who still plug in to tune in.

iCoil, Colin Kent's first Kickstarter project, is a simple, circular plastic accessory that winds your headphone cable two ways â€" allowing it to extend and retract according to your needs.

Kent mentions that most of the cord winding devices that are available to consumers right now come with their own set of earbuds that cannot be swapped out for another pair. And more often than not, these headphones are of a poorer quality than those the user owns. Kent's design, on the other hand, is essentially universal â€" allowing people to use iCoil with the headphones of their choice.

Since its launch on June 8, iCoil has raised almost $11,000 from backers. The project is already fully funded and still has 24 days to go. With an $11 pledge on Kickstarter, the iCoil and tangle-free listening can be yours.

NFL Team's Trolling Tweet Blasts Miami Heat Fans

Miamiheatflickr

Miami Heat fans have already been roasted on social media once during their team's second consecutive NBA title run, as well as victimized by an excellent videobomb on national TV.

But the NFL's Baltimore Ravens piled on some more hate on Tuesday with a troll-tastic tweet making fun of Heat supporters.

The Ravens' Twitter post contrasted fan turnout for their own Super Bowl victory parade in February with the Heat's celebratory championship parade held earlier this week:

While many sports fans on Twitter got a good laugh out of the post, it rubbed other folks in the Miami area the wrong way.

Fox Sports Florida took umbrage to the post post, writing, "We're not exactly sure why the person who runs the Baltimore Ravens' Twitter feed felt the need to try to poke fun of the Heat's victory parade."

And, according to the site, the Ravens had it all wrong. Fox Sports says the Heat parade actually drew 400,000 fans â€" about twice the number that showed up for the celebration in Baltimore. It also suggested some other more flattering photos the Ravens could have used instead:

Was the Ravens' post a solid stunt, or did it go too far? Give us your take in the comments.

Wimbledon Pro Chronicles Journey Through Google Glass

We've written before about the massive impact Google Glass could have on sports and even shared a couple early examples from sports-minded Glass Explorers this spring.

But now we have our closest look yet at the intersection of sports and Google Glass. It comes thanks to Bethanie Mattek-Sands, the 58th-ranked women's tennis player in the world and herself a Glass Explorer, one of the first consumers to use the new wearable technology.

Mattek-Sands is wearing Glass this week at Wimbledon, and the YouTube video embedded above gives an early look at her preparations for the tournament and arrival in London. Seeing life shot from her perspective through Glass is pretty sweet, indeed. The two-and-a-half-minute video includes meetings with trainers and media, her prepping for the trip and some of her earliest practice work on Wimbledon's grass courts.

Other tennis pros at Wimbledon have taken notice, too, it seems.

"I'm really stoked I get to work with Google and test out something that is brand new on the market," Mattek-Sands told USA Today. "All of the players at Wimbledon have been asking about (the glasses)."

It seems only a matter of time before Glass or similar tech gives fans a player's-eye view of their favorite sports, whether tennis, basketball or soccer. Augmented reality for athletes â€" featuring stats and other real-time information â€" will likely become a reality soon enough as well.

We've still got to wait for all that, however. But until then, there's Bethanie Mattek-Sands at Wimbledon, giving the rest of us an early look at the future. Follow her on Twitter to see if she posts more Glass updates from the All England Club this week.

What kind of role do you think Glass or similar tech will come to play in the sports world? Let us know in the comments.

Walmart Slashes Price on iPhone 5, iPhone 4S

Walmart is aggressively lowering the price on Apple's iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S. Beginning Saturday, the iPhone 5 will sell for $129 (down from $189) and the iPhone 4S will sell for just $39 (down from $89). To get the devices at that price will require signing a new two-year contract with Verizon, AT&T or Sprint.

This isn't the first time Walmart has offered drastically lower prices for Apple devices. In December, the company offered the iPhone 5 for $127 and the iPhone 4S for $47 as part of a holiday promotion.

We asked Walmart if the new pricing is temporary and were told that no, this is in fact the permanent price of the items. The new price is only available in Walmart stores and is not available online.

The price drop is also notable because Apple has historically limited the degree to which retailers can drop prices on its products. Although some retailers such as Walmart routinely discount items by $10, cutting the price by more than 30% (in the case of the iPhone 5) and nearly 70% (in the case of the iPhone 4S) is unprecedented.

We contacted Apple for comment on the price drop but haven't heard back as of press time.

Puts Pressure on Competitors

It will be interesting to see if other retailers drop the prices of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S to compete with Walmart. We're also curious about how stores that traditionally price match will handle the new price. In January, Best Buy said it lost $65,000 in one day because of price-matching Walmart's sale price on the iPhone 5.

Since then, the company has run its own sales on the iPhone 5, but none as drastic as the $129 price point Walmart is now targeting.

Why Is the Price Lower?

Its unclear why Walmart is lowering the price so aggressively on the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S. It's possible the company has excess inventory it wants to clear out before the rumored iPhone 5S comes out this fall, or the company could just want to kickstart more sales.

In a Google+ Hangout Friday, Mashable Editor-in-Chief Lance Ulanoff remarked that as long as Apple doesn't have a new product available for purchase, Samsung is in the perfect position to "eat its lunch" all summer with the various versions of the Galaxy S4.

Perhaps a lower price will pull in customers who may otherwise be swayed by Samsung's increasing prowess in the smartphone market.

A price drop also puts pressure on the smaller iPhone competitors such as the Nokia Lumia 920, 925 and 928 and the BlackBerry Z10 and Q10. After all, if the iPhone 5 is less or nearly the same price as those other phones, price-conscious buyers may be less likely to consider something else.

Good News for iPhone 4S Buyers

Although I fully expect an 8GB version of the iPhone 4S to be available for free this fall (with the iPhone 5 taking the $99 spot), the opportunity for buyers to get that phone for $39 now is a great deal. The iPhone 4S is still a terrific phone and certainly better than any other smartphone in the sub-$50 with contract price area.

For users looking to add a good, but not cutting-edge smartphone to their family plan, this is a great opportunity.

What do you think of Walmart's price cuts to the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S? Does it change your purchasing plans? Let us know in the comments.

This Is Your Life in Jelly Beans

Serious introspection usually doesn't come in sugary form, but that's what makes this video so sweet. Using candy, Ze Frank has created a visual representation of the average American's lifetime. One jelly bean equals one day, 28,835 beans total.

From there, he delineates what you'll do with that time â€" working, sleeping, eating, cleaning, caring for others â€" and removes jelly beans for the number of days the average person spends performing these tasks in their lifetime. The pile that's left pales in comparison to the original stack.

Watch the video to see the full thought-provoking visual unfold. And let us know, what will you do with the time you have left?

8 Resources to Help You Build Your Website

Building your own website is a headache â€" especially if you're unfamiliar with coding. Platforms like Tumblr make it easy to create your own website, for personal or professional uses, but a handful of other sites are also out there to help you lock down, personalize and publish your work.

Keep in mind that these aren't necessarily "template sites." The options below are end-to-end website-building platforms, similar to WordPress, and the templates they provide are specifically designed for their respective engines â€" so it's slightly different from other sites, like Theme-Forest, which only sell themes.

Did we miss any good ones? Tell us which platform(s) you use for your websites.

WiX, short for "Windows Installer XML," is an online toolkit for building and customizing your own site. To get started, you can choose between hundreds of templates â€" tailored for specific fields like business, music or design â€" and personalize your pick using the drag-and-drop feature. No coding skills required.

All websites have basic HTML5 capabilities. If you sign up for a free membership, the site provides you with free hosting as well.

"Surprisingly easy" â€" that's Weebly's tagline. The platform is similar to WiX in the themes and tools it provides. Before you begin building, you enter into the "Plan" stage, where you organize what information you're hoping to publish and decide which theme is most fitting. Then, it's off to customizing.

Basic membership is free. A "Starter" membership, which gives you the option to brand, is $4 per month; the all-features-included "Pro" membership is $8 per month.

(Not associated with Drake.)

Yola's mission is to get your website up and running within 30 minutes. Its drag-and-drop Sitebuilder is similar to WiX's. The site examples here, however, don't seem to be quite as professional-looking; but again, it's emphasis is speed, not design.

It's also pricier: You can choose between Bronze, Silver and Gold memberships, which respectively cost $4.95, $9.95 and $19.95/month.

For a bare-boned, no-nonsense "selfie" page, Flavors.me gets the job done.

Emphasis here on simple: There are only seven layouts to choose between with the free membership; the premium membership, which costs $20 per year, gives you 17 layout choices in addition to real-time traffic stats, a customized URL option and a built-in contact form.

Another no-coding-required portfolio builder. Carbonmade lets you select different layouts, adjust the font, color and footer images and upload a personal logo.

There are two subscription options: "Meh," which is free, and "Woohoo!," for $12 per month.

About.me is another simple, yet effective platform for branding yourself online. You can customize your page with photos, résumé, work samples and links to your social networking sites.

Squarespace has a minimalist, step-by-step layout for setting up your website. You can browse the site for themes by genre, like "businesses," "stores" or "restaurants," then sign up for a free trial. Once the trial runs out, you can update to a plan for $8 per month.

Bandcamp is ideal for musicians hoping to promote their work. The platform presents you with a customizable microsite, where you can upload albums or tracks, with the option of making them downloadable to listeners. Registration is free.

BuzzFeed's editor in chief Ben Smith posted a statement about Hastings' death on its site.

"We are shocked and devastated by the news that Michael Hastings is gone. Michael was a great, fearless journalist with an incredible instinct for the story, and a gift for finding ways to make his readers care about anything he covered from wars to politicians," he wrote.

Rolling Stone also posted about Hastings, praising his profile of General Stanley McChrystal, his piece on America's drone war and the interview with WikiLeaks' Julian Assange.

Hastings won a 2010 George Polk Award for his story on General McChrystal, titled "The Runaway General."

"I'm sad that I'll never get to publish all the great stories that he was going to write, and sad that he won't be stopping by my office for any more short visits which would stretch for two or three completely engrossing hours. He will be missed," wrote Rolling Stone's managing editor Will Dana.
