Google Street View Puts You on a Gondola Ride Through Venice

Venice

There's nothing quite like floating down the narrow, romantic canals of Venice, but if you're not planning to visit the watery city, Google can now take you there right from your computer.

The Google Street View team has rolled out an extensive look at the picturesque Italian town, allowing you to virtually visit city landmarks such as Piazza San Marco and St. Marks' Cathedral, or more hidden spots like the Synagogue of the first Jewish Ghetto and the Devil’s Bridge in Torcello island. The images were captured via Google's Trekker and Trike equipment.

"We chose Venice because it's the perfect place to demonstrate why the Street View platforms have evolved from the SV car and the Trike (3-wheel pedicab) to the Snowmobile for the ski slopes and now the Trekker," a Google spokesperson told Mashable.

"The narrow roads and bridges of Venice show off the need for the Trekker to bring imagery of more breathtaking places online for the world to see," a Google spokesperson told Mashable. "Other pedestrian-only places we could take the Trekker include hiking in the natural forests and climbing the steps of ancient temples and castles."

Google also added artwork to its Cultural Institute online, which now lets you peek inside the Venetian Museo Correr and Museo del Vetro andCa’ Pesaro.

The Venice collection, which features 265 miles of imagery on foot and 114 miles by boat, is the latest effort from Google to give users an in-depth look at places they might not have easy access to, from the top of Mt. Fuji in Japan to the locker room of the Indianapolis Colts.
