Beddit Sleep Tracker Doesn't Require Wearable Tech

Whoever said "you can sleep when you're dead" obviously never tried to forgo this important life function themselves for more than a couple nights. Getting enough sleep is so important to our body's concentration, memory and daily function that the United States' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has called insufficient sleep a "public health epidemic."

So, to get smart about your sleep quality, a new sensor that slips under your sheets can give you some nighttime insights. The Beddit sleep and wellness device tracks your heart rate, breathing, snoring, movements, environment and sleep patterns, as explained in the video above.

We've seen sleep tracking abilities before in other wearable tech â€" like the Fitbit gadgets and Jawbone's UP â€" but the beauty of Beddit is it doesn't require a user to wear a bracelet or chip.

The thin Beddit sensor tracks all your sleep information and transmit that data via Bluetooth to an iOS or Android smartphone. The mobile app will show the stats and and will provide "personalized coaching tips" for improving sleep.

Beddit creators have already surpassed their $80,000 crowdfunding goal on Indiegogo, in order to pay for finalizing design, completing the app and ordering the first production batch. With still 35 days left in the Indiegogo campaign, supporters had pledged more than $218,000, as of Tuesday evening. Supporters can get their own Beddit â€" in black or white â€" for $99 on Indiegogo, cheaper than the reportedly $150 retail price.

The company also has a pro version of Beddit for about $400. However, the pro version requires an additional bedside device.

For a cheaper alternative to track sleep, I've used Maciek Drejak Labs' Sleep Cycle alarm clock iOS app in the past. The $1.99 app provides statistics about sleep quality but requires your iPhone to be placed on your bed all night.
