The weather outside may be warming up for some, but if you're looking for a somewhat warm and geeky addition to your wardrobe, check out this do-it-yourself scarf that changes colors via LED lights.
The DIY electronics site Adafruit has a tutorial for this LED-studded scarf. You'll need your own fabric, as well as Adafruit's Flora circuitry to make it all work, as explained in the video above. You might need to be a bit of a techie for this project (or recruit a techie friend), since you'll need to work with circuitry and coding.
Flora technology is designed to be embedded in clothing and is Arduino-compatible. (Arduino is an open-source electronics program.) For this scarf, Flora helps control LED "pixels" and a color sensor. Once you sew the required gadgetry with the fabric, following the tutorial's instructions, you'll then need to do a bit of coding. That way, the scarf is able to detect colors and match the LED lights accordingly.
With the color-changing lights diffused by the fabric, you've got yourself an eye-catching custom scarf.
Of course, the whole system needs power, so a battery that isn't too clunky might work best. Another hitch to note is you'll need to pull out the electronics before washing this scarf.
What do you think about this do-it-yourself, color changing scarf project? Cool or tacky? Let us know in the comments.
