Microsoft has given Skype a makeover for Windows 8. The new app has a beautiful full-screen interface that combines messaging, group chat and video calls all into one.
The app shows recent activity on the left, followed by favorite contacts and your general contacts list ("people") on the right.
Clicking on the phone icon opens up the dial pad along with a list of recent calls.
When you call someone, here's what the screen looks like.
When a call comes in, Skype sends you an alert whatever app you're in â" even if the PC is locked. The app doesn't need to be running to get the alert.
Here's what a video call looks like in the app. It's full screen by default.
Skype supports Snap, which means you can easily move your call to the side of the screen while you open up a browser window or a document.
Your options for managing your account within the app are limited. Anything more complicated than changing your profile picture requires a browser.
Selecting a contact shows your communication history, including IMs.
The app supports semantic zoom, meaning you can just pinch to change from a scrolling list of contacts to an alphabetized menu.
The Windows 8 version of Skype has a simplified set of options.
Microsoftâs Skype for Windows 8, the new version of the popular VoIP/chat app tailored for use with the new OS, is now available for download as Preview.
Weâve reviewed the beta version of the app in October, and found much to like â" in particular, the smart layout, call reliability and fast operation.
The Preview version of the app is not for everyone, though â" Microsoft notes that the âexperiencesâ in the app are ânot yet final.â Specifically, Microsoft says there might be issues with âcall reliability and the ability to receive incoming calls and chat notifications when outside of the app.â
Still, if youâre aware of the potential issues, Skype for Windows 8 Preview is a good choice if you want to see a very smart and stylish Windows 8 app.
Skype for Windows 8 Preview is available for free at the Windows Phone Store.
